Apocalyptic Studies - Lesson 7

Israel and Her Prophetic Destiny

Understanding God's plans for Israel is an important key to understanding apocalyptic revelation in the bible.

In this study we discuss Replacement Theology, Paul's teaching in Romans 11 on national Israel's destiny, Jewish election and priority, and Israel as firstborn son among the nations. Also covered is a high level overview of prophetic events recently fulfilled and those still future for Israel including the return of Israel from global exile to their own land, the end of Gentile control of Jerusalem, Psalm 83 prophecy, Ezekiel's war (Gog and Magog), and Zechariah's prophecy about all nations being gathered to fight against Jerusalem.

Career of Messiah - The Anointed One

Messiah means anointed one. This is a transliteration of a Hebrew word. The Greek word for it is Christ.

In the Old Testament (Hebrew bible) anointing was a ritual of pouring oil over someone who had been designated by God to fulfill an office. Three types of individuals were anointed: Prophets, Priests and Kings.

Jesus Christ, as Messiah, fulfills all three offices.

This chart summarizes the career of Messiah down through history, and the primary names and titles associated with him.

The office boundaries are not hard and fast, but given in the time period when that office is prominent.

Bible Verses about Creation

When we think of creation we usually think of just a few biblical references, usually Genesis 1 and 2, Proverbs 8 (Lady Wisdom) and probably John 1 (Christ, the Logos as creator alongside God the Father).

But the Bible has a lot more to say about creation than just those familiar verses... it mentions creation or Creator/Maker in more than 130 different passages spread out across 35 books.  We can get a much more complete and nuanced picture of divine creation by searching out and reflecting on all these other references.

Below is a compilation of the texts in the Bible having reference to the creation of the cosmos and its inhabitants. Note: the bold emphasis is mine.

Biblical Cosmos (Part 1) - Introduction

This article begins a series of blog entries which explore the Biblical view of the universe.

Some of the questions to be addressed include:

• What are the primary components God created in the universe? By components I mean realms, beings, important things/places.  Visible and invisible.
• What Biblical names and roles are associated with each component?
• What metaphors, imagery and symbolism does God use to communicate the reality of the universe so that all people (ancient and modern) can comprehend it?  It is assumed this language transcends civilizations, cultures and empirical knowledge (pre-scientific vs. now).
• How are the various components of the universe structured and related to each other?
• Which beings/things inhabit each realm?  What movement or relocation from one realm to other realms exists?
• What components of the universe have changed or will change over time and how?
• Where do we fit in? What is our place and purpose in the cosmos?

Introduction

Sometimes we get too close to our problems and fail to see the larger framework that God is working out in history.

The Judeo-Christian bible teaches us that history is moving toward a divinely appointed goal, and it helps if we step back and look at it from a big picture perspective.  This approach is like looking at the top of a puzzle box to see how the puzzle pieces fit together to form a picture.

Saints and Sinners

When somebody yields to temptation

    And breaks one of man’s or God’s laws,

We look for no good in his make-up,

    But oh! how we look for the flaws!

Have You Got The Whole Story

Mike Cain's article "Have You Got The Whole Story?" (click to view) is a really good overview of the story line of the Bible.

If you are having trouble seeing the big picture, this essay will help you.

It has a few British idioms in it so I've given the American "translations" below:

• "chocolate digestive biscuits" - a semi-sweet cracker, something like a Graham cracker with a milk-chocolate covering on top; frequently eaten with tea or coffee. 
• "Sainsbury bag" - a plastic shopping bag. Sainsbury is a large supermarket chain in the UK, probably like one of our Super Walmart stores.
• "sticking plaster" - a band-aid.
• "a bed-sit in Balham" - a one-room apartment in a neighborhood in south London.
• "holidays in Bognor" - Bognor is a seaside resort town on the south coast of England.

Two of my favorite quotes from the article:

Living for him is not shackles, it is freedom. And it is fun. Life with the one who made the stars and dragonflies is not long-faced and "bible black." The body is not a prison from which to escape. He made our bodies for us to enjoy. So he didn't give us fuel to stick in our sides, he gave us food to taste: he gave us pineapples, grilled sea bass, potato salad, chocolate fudge cake and raspberries

The Bible says God looked at what he made and called it, "very good."

When God expels Adam and Eve from the Garden, He also makes a promise. He promises that someone descended from this woman will come to put things right and restore us to life with God again. And the story of the bible turns out to be the story of God keeping that promise.
